Encapsulated O-Rings at NewDealSeals

In the realm of sealing technology, Encapsulated O-rings, also known as FEP, PFA, or PTFE Encapsulated O-rings, stand out as a smart choice for various applications. Combining the resilience of elastomers with the protective properties of fluoroplastics, these O-rings offer an effective sealing solution that can withstand chemical and thermal challenges.

What are encapsulated O-rings?

Encapsulated O-rings are specialised sealing components designed to provide effective sealing solutions in demanding environments. They are constructed with a unique combination of materials to offer superior chemical resistance, thermal stability, and reliable sealing performance.

Functioning of encapsulated O-rings

Encapsulated O-rings, though similar in function to regular O-rings, offer unique advantages that make them stand out in demanding sealing applications. Their functioning is rooted in the fundamental principles of sealing technology.

How Encapsulated O-Rings Work:

  • Elastic Sealing: Encapsulated O-rings operate on the same core principle as regular O-rings. They are elastic components strategically placed between two parts that need to be sealed.
  • Gap Filling: When squeezed between the two parts, the O-ring fills the gap, creating a physical barrier that prevents the escape of liquids or gases. This compression creates a reliable seal.
  • Pressure-Induced Flow: Under pressure, the O-ring is compelled to “flow” within the groove toward the clearance gap. As it flows against the gap, it effectively eliminates any clearance, ensuring a tight and secure seal.

Key advantages of encapsulated O-rings:

  • Exceptional Chemical Resistance
  • Thermal Resilience

Encapsulated O-rings are not suitable for:

  • Small cross sections >1.5mm.
  • Applications where a low closing force is available.

Composition Encapsulated O-Rings

  • Elastomeric Core: At the core of Encapsulated O-rings is an elastomeric core made from high-quality materials like Viton® (FKM) or Silicone (VMQ) rubber.
  • Fluoroplastic Encapsulation: Surrounding the elastomeric core is an outer layer of fluoroplastic material, which can be FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene), PFA (perfluoroalkoxy), or PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene).

Encapsulated O-ring types

FEP ENCAPSULATED SILICONE (VMQ)

The most commonly used encapsulated seal type. The silicone core provides resiliency, while the FEP encapsulation offers chemical protection and great thermal resistance.

Advantages

  • High chemical resistance
  • Broad temperature range
  • No stick slip effect

PFA ENCAPSULATED SILICONE (VMQ)

The silicone core provides resiliency, while the PFA encapsulation offers chemical protection and great thermal resistance.

Advantages

  • High chemical resistance
  • Broad temperature range
  • Improved heat resistance
  • Low gas permeation

FEP ENCAPSULATED SILICONE (VMQ) HOLLOW CORE

The hollow core of this encapsulated seal type allows successful sealing with less compression force. Excellent for use in low pressure applications and applications where low sealing force is available.

Advantages

  • High chemical resistance
  • Broad temperature range
  • No stick slip effect
  • Low closing force

PTFE ENCAPSULATED FKM

The PTFE encapsulated FKM O-ring has superior chemical properties, very low permeability and low friction coefficient. The PTFE encapsulations offers longer lifetime in comparison to FEP/PFA

Advantages

  • High chemical resistance
  • Broad temperature range
  • No stick slip effect
  • Improved friction coefficient
