Bonded Seals at NewDealSeals

Bonded seals, also known as Dowty washers or Dowty seals, are your trusted solution for sealing bolt heads, nuts, screws, and flange connections. These static seals are designed to provide impeccable sealing performance and reliability, ensuring that your critical connections remain secure and leak-free.

What are Bonded Seals?

Bonded seals, also known as Dowty seals or Dowty washers, are static sealing components used to create a reliable and leak-free connection between two surfaces, typically in bolted or screwed applications. These seals are designed to prevent the escape of fluids, gases, or other substances from the joint, ensuring a secure and durable seal.

Composition of bonded seals

The composition of bonded seals is straightforward yet effective. They consist of a flat metal ring, which can be crafted from steel, stainless steel, or aluminum, combined with an inner layer of elastic rubber. The rubber material options include NBR, HNBR, FKM, and EPDM, each chosen for its specific sealing properties and compatibility with diverse applications.

The construction of bonded seals consists of two primary components:

  • Metal Ring: The outer part of the seal is a flat metal ring, which is often made of materials like steel, stainless steel, or aluminum. This metal ring provides stability, strength, and a secure anchor for the seal.
  • Elastic Rubber Layer: The inner part of the seal is an elastic rubber layer, which is typically made from materials such as NBR (Nitrile), HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile), FKM (Fluoroelastomer), or EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer). This rubber layer creates a flexible and deformable seal that conforms to the mating surfaces, ensuring a tight and effective seal.

Advantages of bonded seals

Bonded seals stand as the epitome of sealing excellence, delivering a host of advantages that make them the preferred choice for critical applications:

  1. Reliable Sealing at High and Low Pressure: Bonded seals excel in providing unwavering sealing performance across a wide spectrum of pressures. Whether it’s high-pressure hydraulic systems or low-pressure connections, these seals ensure a leak-free seal, maintaining system integrity under all conditions.
  2. Easy to Use: Bonded seals are designed for ease of use. The inclusion of a metal or steel ring within the seal structure serves as a safeguard against over-compression. This user-friendly design not only simplifies installation but also enhances the longevity of the seal.
  3. Low Bolt Torque: In comparison to fully metallic seals, bonded seals require significantly lower bolt torque to achieve a reliable seal. This characteristic not only reduces the effort required during assembly but also minimizes the risk of damage to the sealing components.

Profiles

Profile Regular

The most common bonded seal. Bonded seals are primarily used to replace copper joint rings in high pressure applications. The steel ring prevents over compression and extrusion. The elastomeric part allows reliable sealing for both high and low pressure operation. Unlike copper joint rings, bonded seals can be re-used after assembly.

Profile Self Centering

The self centering bonded seal profile eliminates sealing offset and allows easy installation. Self centering bonded seals can be pre-assembled.
